What Vermont Homeowners Say About Our Work

Want to see more?

Our Deck Staining Process

  1. Repairs First

Popped fasteners set, split boards swapped. Staining over a board that needs replacing just means doing the whole thing again next year.

  2. Sanding and Stripping

Old finish taken back so the new coat reaches wood instead of sitting on top of failed stain. Grayed fiber comes off with it.

  3. Cleaning and Brightening

A wash, then a brightener to bring the pH back after cleaning. Skipping this step is why some decks go blotchy a month later.

  4. Drying to Moisture

The deck has to read dry before anything goes on. This is the stage that moves the start date, and it isn't negotiable.

  5. Stain or Paint

Penetrating semi-transparent on the decking, solid or paint on rails and risers where a film coat belongs and won't be walked on.

  6. Sealing and Cleanup

A clear sealer over the stain on decks taking full sun and snow load, plants uncovered, hardware unmasked, and honest guidance on cure time.

What Makes Us Different From Other Deck Staining Companies

  • Prep Is Most of the Job

Sanded, washed, brightened and dried before anything goes down. Most crews quote the rolling and treat everything before it as optional.

  • We Wait for Dry Wood

Stain over damp boards fails inside a year. If the weather won't cooperate we move your date rather than putting a finish down that won't hold.

  • The Product Is on the Estimate

You get the actual brand, product and number of coats in writing, not just a price per square foot with the material left unnamed.

Common Deck Staining Questions

Why does deck staining cost more than the price of the stain?

Almost every failed finish we get called to look at failed because it went onto a surface that wasn't ready: damp wood, old stain still in the grain, or mill glaze never sanded off. Done properly a stain lasts three to five years here. Rushed, it lasts one. Boards that are soft rather than just gray are a deck repair first, because no finish will save them.

Can you stain a brand new pressure-treated deck?

Mill glaze is a slick surface left by the planers at the mill, and stain won't penetrate through it no matter what the tin says. New decking gets sanded before its first coat, which is the step most people skip.

Should we paint or stain our deck?

Paint forms a film on top of the wood. On a rail that's fine. On a floor that gets walked on, dragged furniture across and frozen every winter, that film cracks and peels, and stripping peeled paint off decking is a far worse job than recoating stain.

How often does a deck need recoating in Vermont?

UV breaks down finish faster than foot traffic does. Two identical decks on the same house can be a full year apart on recoating, so we tell you which schedule yours is on rather than quoting a generic interval.
